Containing a crisis: One region’s response to Covid-19

When faced with a global health challenge, the Siemens Gamesa Service organization’s Northern Europe / Middle East region looked inward for solutions.

As with most sectors, the Covid-19 pandemic has critically impacted power generation as a whole. For essential workers like wind service technicians, however, stopping work was never an option. The quest to find innovative ways to keep the lights on inspired one region to pull together and collectively determine a way forward.

Pushing offshore to a new dimension

Titan, giant, colossus, gargantuan scale, monumental dimensions. Describing Siemens Gamesa’s new offshore wind turbine is no easy job. With an unprecedented energy capacity of 14 MW and rotor of 222 meters, the launch of the turbine amazed the market. In just over a month, it accumulated 4.3 GW of conditional orders with different customers in markets as diverse as Taiwan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Siemens Gamesa plans to support a diverse range of projects through a contribution of €80,000 to help combat the effects of COVID-19 in Mexico. Among the 12 programs that are part of the SGRE Impact social project worldwide, one of them will be managed by SEDAC. I.A.P., which will help children from 3 to 12 years old in low-income communities gain access to quality education and balanced food packages for the duration of the pandemic. This initiative is committed to eradicating child labor in the brickyard area of Mexico City.

Wind turbines instead of lignite power plants

Nine projects with a total of 368 MW of newly installed capacity, most recently expanded through the 30MW Ujazd project: Siemens Gamesa's current project pipeline in Poland illustrates how dynamically wind energy is developing in the EU's sixth largest country. Two auctions in 2018-19 for a total of 3.5 GW have set the course for more electricity coming from wind. But the country's CO2 balance remains challenging.
